SSX – Cascadia, the Brave and the Bold

Free-Cascadia

The start of the season was bumpy. That’s an understatement. It was uninspiring and less than perfect with the Sounder’s FO providing very little information (I know it’s business but I still don’t have to like being kept in the dark) and Sigi’s starting eleven look like a mishmash of confidence and insecurity. In great Seattle fashion, the inexperienced turned to the veterans for direction. Results be damned, the Sounders defeated the top CCL team in style and unity. It can only get better coming into Cascadia Weekend with the addition of Obafemi Martins.

Three rockets. That’s what Seattle had in their silos against the the Tigres on Tuesday.  Newcomer defenders Yedlin and Traore sent long balls into the Mexican side’s netting with ferocious intensity. Eddie Johnson pounded the final nail in their coffin with a ball that seemed to be soaked in oil. More like the blood of our enemy. A momentous day spurred on by weeks of rumors of potentially signing Nigerian forward, Obafemi Martins.

And it happened yesterday. The 28 year-old got on a plane to Seattle with hopes to play in the Timbers game on Saturday. It’s been a whirlwind for the goal-scorer, a dervish of elation for the fans and, I am only guessing here, a sign of exhaustion for the Sounders organization. I would normally go on about how the Timbers are losers and suck and the title of Soccer City is firmly planted in Seattle (yes, despite their winning the Cascadia Cup). In good conscious, I cannot do that. I still spew vitriole and hipster beer at them but after their first two game, the little brother very well may have put on their big boy pants. I have been a firm believer in Cascadia being played with true intent and passion. I want the Sounders, Timbers and Whitecaps to earn their trophy. To me, it’s an honor to play these teams and to pit our supporters against theirs with mutual respect and backroom hate.

It’s a crapshoot today. Both teams have their business and both need to get it done. The Sounders will do what they do best: Win games with star firepower and excellent depth on the bench.

COME ON, YOU SOUNDERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
